Installation of Devuan GNU/Linux distro on a Personal Computer

What do we need

Needed: A Personal Computer (x86 architecture)

A not so trivial process

To my personal experience the task must be performed from a person with sufficient experience and knowledge in computers and linux nstallation. Again to my experience polished installers are not a sign of an installer that will function propeply.

Expectations

Also we must lay down our expectations . And in the case of linux distros that mean having also a certain level of hardware knowledge . By that vague term i mean especially hardware compatbility . Models of wifi chisets , gpus , and various peripherals. And that means also knowledge how to find that info for various hardware. In that case that installation of Devuan could have ended but not having met our expectations.

Knowledge

  • PC Booting process (BIOS,UEFI)
  • PC BIOS Settings
  • Ability to access the working status of a storage device
    • sata hdd
    • sata ssd
    • nvme
    • usb flash (in the market frequently i had aquired flash of very bad quality)
  • Connecting storage devices in the motherboard
  • GRUB2
  • formatting a usb flash storage device
  • writing the distro iso image on the usb flash
  • validating distro image download
  • performing the installation
  • troubleshooting various issues that can appear
    • in hardware
    • in software
    • in pc connectivity

The typical installation workflow

Select a usb flash drive (assess its working condition)

Write the Devuan iso image.

Prepare the PC (remove all storage devices except the main one )

Initiate the installation.
