current docs : For best results during an upgrade scenario, shutting down all non-essential software is recommended. For example, one might choose to shut down the X graphical environment, and type the upgrade commands below from a virtual terminal (Control-Alt-F1 through Control-Alt-F6).
Why should we close X ?
And how do we close X ? (irc/devuan)if you login from an X gui, you'd want to logout, switch a text console (CTRL+ALT+F1), login from there, and stop the service for the X login manager...
